Push your limits with high-energy classes emphasizing kicking technique and steadfast resilience. Our Taekwondo training is about more than fighting—it’s about excelling in life.
Since 1984, Kim’s Academy has helped students of all ages build confidence, fitness, and real-world self-defense skills. Founded by Grandmaster Kim—who first brought Taekwondo to Utah—our school provides a safe, welcoming space for everyone from absolute beginners to advanced martial artists.
We focus on practical skills, physical health, and personal growth. Whether you want your child to learn discipline or you want to get in shape while learning to protect yourself, we are here to support your goals.
Taekwondo is a traditional Korean martial art famous for its dynamic kicking and striking techniques. We teach traditional forms (patterns), Olympic-style sparring, and essential life skills like focus, respect, and perseverance.
Our Hapkido program offers a practical approach to self-defense training. These classes blend traditional striking, blocking, and open-hand techniques. It is an excellent way to improve your full-body strength, flexibility, and reflexes while learning classic martial arts foundations. Hapkido is focused on redirection techniques, teaching students joint locks, throws, pressure points, and effective self-defense strategies to safely escape or neutralize threats. This well-rounded martial art helps improve coordination, balance, flexibility, and confidence while developing real-world self-defense skills.
Our specialized self-defense programs focus on situational awareness, practical escape tactics, and anti-bullying techniques. We teach you how to stay calm under pressure and handle real-world safety challenges confidently.
The best way to see if our academy is right for you is to experience it yourself. We invite you to visit our school, watch a session, and take your first step.
The main difference lies in their combat philosophy and techniques. Taekwondo relies heavily on dynamic, fast kicking maneuvers. Hapkido functions as a close-quarters self-defense system focused on redirection, joint manipulation, and throws. Korean Karate blends linear upper-body striking and classic defensive blocking patterns.
Hapkido builds excellent core strength, spatial awareness, flexibility, and fluid coordination due to its throwing, redirection, and joint-locking mechanics. It also helps students develop confidence and practical self-defense skills that can be applied in real-world situations.
Yes, many students choose to cross-train. The striking power developed in Taekwondo pairs exceptionally well with the defensive techniques and joint locks taught in Hapkido, offering a fully rounded martial arts skill set.
Our martial arts school is located at 1602 East 2100 South, Salt Lake City, UT. We are easily accessible to students traveling from nearby neighborhoods like Sugar House, Millcreek, and Canyon Rim.
Children can comfortably begin their martial arts training with us around the age of 4 or 5. At this developmental level, lessons focus on fundamental physical coordination, listening skills, and basic concepts of focus and respect.
New students should wear any loose, comfortable athletic apparel—such as a t-shirt coupled with athletic pants or shorts. There is no need to purchase a formal uniform (dobok) for your trial experience.Bring a water bottle, however we do have a drinking fountain.
Achieving a first-degree Black Belt typically requires 3 to 5 years of steady, regular training. The exact timeline relies heavily on a student’s dedication, personal maturity, and class attendance rather than a fixed calendar metric.

We take all ages. Students are enrolling as young as four years old as adults. Each age group’s curriculum is designed according to their developmental needs and learning pace.
No prior experience is necessary to start your martial arts journey with us. Our programs are designed to accommodate beginners and then build their skills.
Our classes are always headed by certified, instructor-led instructors who undergo specific training regarding safety protocols. We also keep a low ratio of students to instructors so that students receive attention and care.
I made one of the best choices of my life when I joined Kim's Academy. I mean, training here is top notch, and these instructors are really interested in own progress. That is not only physical improvement but also confidence that spreads into every particular corner of my life.
